That Not So Fresh Feeling
I can't help being so envious when I picture my friend wonko living in such a wilderness paradise. Having grown up in a similar climate I find myself missing it terribly after hearing his stories or reading his blog entries about Mammoth, California.
So why not move there you say? Well I wish it were that easy. First off I spent a couple years living in Southern California and after moving back home (to Arizona), my wife said she would not return. Secondly there is not enough industry in Mammoth to support the work my wife and I do.
If I were single and did not have to worry about taking care of another person I would move to the mountains of California in a second. I would give up the life I have, to have a life of everlasting change with nature. A life where I am inspired and enlightened by the sights, sounds, and smells of her.
I miss the smells and sounds of the open wilderness; The coolness of the winds blowing through the trees and then wrapping around you like arms of a comforting parent. A parent who opens your eyes to what is REAL. Opening your eyes to reveal to you the world as it was intended; With infinite beauty and serenity.
Instead, I sit in a cubicle in a city filled with people, smog, dust, and a Not So Fresh Feeling about who and where I am.

We always talk about what we want to do. Usually we're talking about this in a corporate sense, but I think we should look at it in a more holistic way. The truth is, what we want to do with our lives, in a long term way, and on a day to day basis is constantly changing. Because of our inability to nail it down or ever truly reach our utopia, it is a constant process. More important than reaching the goal is moving in the direction of the goal. C.S. Lewis said, "Progress isn't always moving forward. Indeed, if we are moving in the wrong direction, progress is going back to the beginning and going in the right direction."
That is definitely a quote I live by. It is important to know where you want to be. Once you decide, do not fret about not being there. As long as you are taking steps, you can find satisfaction in knowing you are moving in the right direction.
Moving is one of the last steps because it is the most intrusive. But there are other small steps. The trick is to figure out what they are and which of them you can do at this point in your life.
It is important to CONSTANTLY be moving in the right direction for a couple reasons. One, you will no doubt find after a couple years have gone by you are farther along than you thought. Secondly, when it IS time to make a BIG decision, you need to be ready. :)
